How to prune 'cavolo nero' kale

Snap or cut individual outer leaves at the base of the stem, working from the bottom of the plant upward. Always leave the central rosette and at least 4–6 inner leaves intact to maintain vigorous regrowth.

Every 1–2 weeks during the harvest period. Cavolo Nero (Tuscan black kale) is a cut-and-come-again crop — harvest outer leaves regularly from the bottom up, leaving the growing crown intact. This is the primary 'pruning' action. Remove yellowing or pest-damaged lower leaves promptly. The plant can remain productive for many months with this approach.
