Early spring as buds begin to show (March–April). Use secateurs or shears to cut all the previous year's stems back to 5–10 cm above the old woody crown, leaving two or three pairs of healthy buds on each stem. Do not cut into very old wood below the buds — the plant may not regenerate from bare old wood.

Annually every spring. Bluebeard flowers on the current season's growth, so cutting it back hard each spring is the key pruning rule.
