How to prune cardamom

After harvest (autumn to early winter); remove dead canes any time. Cut spent or dead canes at ground level with clean, sharp secateurs. Remove no more than one-third of total canes in any season. Leave vigorous young canes untouched as they are next year's producers.

Annually after harvest; remove dead canes as needed throughout the year. Cardamom requires minimal pruning. Remove spent flower stalks at the base after harvest and cut out any dead, diseased, or damaged canes at ground level. Old canes that have already flowered and fruited will not produce again — remove these to redirect energy to young productive canes. Avoid hard pruning healthy green growth.
