Pruning cantaloupe — FAQ
When should I prune cantaloupe?
After fruit set in early-to-midsummer; tip-prune in midsummer for short-season climates. Pinch off lateral shoots that develop beyond 2–3 leaves past a set fruit. Once 2–3 melons are established and growing, remove additional female flowers and pinch the main vine tip to redirect energy to ripening.
How often does cantaloupe need pruning?
Once or twice during the growing season. Cantaloupe benefits from pruning secondary vines to channel energy into fruit development. Remove lateral shoots beyond the second or third leaf after a fruit sets. In short seasons, pinch the main growing tip in midsummer to force the plant to ripen existing fruits rather than setting new ones.
