How to prune buccaneer palm

Any time a frond is fully dead; late winter tidying is conventional. Use a clean, sterilised pruning saw or loppers. Cut dead fronds at the base of the petiole, close to the smooth trunk. Avoid cuts that nick the trunk. No other pruning is needed or beneficial.

Rarely; remove individual dead fronds as needed, typically just once or twice a year. Buccaneer Palm (Pseudophoenix sargentii) is a rare, slow-growing conservation-status palm needing minimal pruning. Remove only fully dead and brown fronds. This species grows very slowly, so unnecessary pruning is especially counterproductive. Leave yellowing fronds until completely brown, as the palm reabsorbs nutrients. Never cut the growing tip.
