Pruning bromeliad — FAQ
When should I prune bromeliad?
Remove dead mother plant in spring or whenever it has fully browned; separate pups once large enough. Once the mother rosette is completely dead, twist or cut it away at the base, leaving pups attached to the root system. Separate each pup by cutting close to the mother stem with a sharp, clean knife, ensuring the pup has some roots.
How often does bromeliad need pruning?
Once per plant life cycle (mother rosette); pup separation as they mature. Bromeliads flower once then the main rosette slowly dies, producing offsets (pups). No pruning of living leaves is needed. Remove the spent central rosette only once it is fully brown and dead. Separate pups when they reach about one-third the size of the mother plant and pot them individually.
