Pruning areca palm — FAQ
When should I prune areca palm?
Year-round as fronds die back; spring clean-up is a good time for a full tidy. Cut dead fronds at the base of their stem as close to the soil or main trunk as possible using clean, sharp pruners. Leave any yellowing or partially green fronds until fully brown — premature removal weakens the plant.
How often does areca palm need pruning?
As needed; typically a few fronds per year in good growing conditions. Areca palm needs minimal pruning. Remove entirely brown or dead fronds by cutting the stem cleanly at the base near soil level. Do not cut fronds that are only partially brown — the green portion is still photosynthesising. Never cut the main growing tips (the crown) as this permanently halts growth on that stem.
