When should I prune amaryllis?
Remove spent flower stalks immediately after blooming; remove yellowed leaves in autumn. Cut the hollow flower stalk cleanly near the bulb base with sharp, clean scissors. Leave all green foliage intact until it yellows on its own — those leaves are feeding next year's flowers.
How often does amaryllis need pruning?
As needed (stalks after each bloom cycle; foliage once per dormancy cycle). Amaryllis needs minimal pruning. Once flowers fade, cut the flower stalk down to within 2 inches of the bulb nose — do not cut the strap-like leaves. Keep the leaves growing through summer so the bulb stores energy for next year. Remove leaves only once they yellow naturally in autumn.
