Zombie Palm problems — and how to fix them
Zombie Palm (Zombia antillarum) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Crown rot from overwatering
The most common killer in cultivation; the crown becomes mushy and fronds collapse — plant in raised beds or gritty soil and never allow water to pool at the base.
Potassium deficiency
Oldest fronds develop orange-bronze necrotic tips and margins, then entire fronds brown; correct with a palm-grade potassium-rich fertiliser applied to the soil surface.
Physical injury from spines
The interlocking spines cause puncture injuries during maintenance work; always wear heavy leather gloves and eye protection when pruning dead fronds or working near this palm.
