Youngberry problems — and how to fix them
Youngberry (Rubus caesius × fruticosus 'Youngberry') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Botrytis fruit rot
Soft berries with grey mould in damp weather. Harvest promptly and remove affected fruit; thin canes for airflow.
Frost damage to floricanes
Hard winters can kill the fruiting canes at the cold edge of its range. Tie canes off the ground and mulch the crown.
Cane blight and spur blight
Dark lesions and dieback on canes. Cut out and burn old fruited canes and avoid overhead watering.
Birds and wasps
Soft, sweet fruit attracts both. Net as berries colour and pick frequently to limit wasp damage.
