Woodland Sage problems — and how to fix them
Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa) is generally low-drama, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Powdery mildew
A common issue in hot, dry summers or crowded plantings; improve air circulation by spacing plants 45 cm apart and cut back affected stems; resistant cultivars such as 'Caradonna' are a good choice for problem sites.
Failure to rebloom
Many gardeners miss the second flush because they do not cut back spent spikes promptly; shear the whole plant to about 10 cm after the first flowering to stimulate strong repeat bloom within 4–6 weeks.
