Wonderful Puya problems — and how to fix them
Wonderful Puya (Puya mirabilis) is generally low-drama, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Root and crown rot
The primary killer in cultivation; caused by excess moisture at the roots or crown, particularly during cool temperatures. Ensure outstanding drainage and move container plants under cover in autumn in all but the mildest UK gardens.
Scale insects
Armoured scale can cluster along the leaf undersides and flowering stems, going unnoticed until yellowing appears. Scrape off visible colonies with a soft brush dipped in soapy water and treat with horticultural oil if severe.
