Waras' Parodia problems — and how to fix them
Waras' Parodia (Parodia warasii) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Root rot from overwatering
Despite being more moisture-tolerant than some cacti, Parodia warasii is susceptible to root rot if kept wet. The body may pucker and collapse. Allow adequate drying between waterings and use well-draining media.
Spider mites
Dry indoor air encourages spider mite infestations, visible as fine webbing and rusty stippling on the stem. Treat by improving ventilation and applying neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Failure to flower
Insufficient light and skipping a cool, dry winter rest are the main causes. Ensure bright light and a cool dry winter period (around 10°C/50°F) for 6–8 weeks to trigger spring flower bud formation.
