Valais fescue problems — and how to fix them
Valais fescue (Festuca valesiaca) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Crown rot
Caused by excessive moisture or poor drainage. Ensure sharply draining soil and avoid watering into the crown. Divide and replant on a mound if drainage cannot be improved.
Centre die-out
Older clumps often die out in the centre after 3–5 years. Divide in spring every 2–3 years, discarding the dead centre and replanting vigorous outer sections.
Fungal leaf spots
Can occur in humid conditions with poor airflow. Improve spacing and airflow; cut back dead foliage in late winter. Avoid wetting foliage during watering.
