Unscented Dendrobium problems — and how to fix them
Unscented Dendrobium (Dendrobium anosmum) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
No flowers despite healthy canes
Flowering is triggered by a cool dry winter rest. If kept warm and watered through winter, canes stay vegetative. Reduce watering and lower temperatures to 10–15°C / 50–59°F for 8–12 weeks in autumn–winter.
Shrivelled or rotting canes
Shrivelling in rest is normal but severe shrivelling indicates excessive drought; water lightly every 3–4 weeks. Black rot on canes during rest indicates excess moisture — improve air circulation and hold water until new growth emerges.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs shelter at cane nodes and pseudobulb bases. Treat by dabbing with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab and applying neem oil spray repeated every 7–10 days until clear.
Prevent unscented dendrobium problems before they start
Most unscented dendrobium issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
