Triangle Fern problems — and how to fix them
Triangle Fern (Pteridium aquilinum) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Invasive spreading
Deep, far-creeping rhizomes let it colonize aggressively and resprout from fragments. Grow only in a confined deep container or a controlled area, and never let it escape into open ground.
Toxicity to animals and people
Contains thiaminase and the carcinogen ptaquiloside. Keep away from horses, livestock, and curious pets, and never eat the fronds despite folk traditions of eating fiddleheads.
Browning, dying fronds in autumn
Normal — this is a deciduous fern that dies back for winter. Cut down spent fronds; new ones emerge as croziers in spring.
Chlorotic, weak fronds on alkaline soil
It needs acidic ground; on limey or waterlogged soil it yellows and sulks. Provide acidic, free-draining conditions.
