Purple Heart problems — and how to fix them
Purple Heart (Tradescantia pallida) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Faded, greenish colour
Too little light. Move to a brighter spot with some direct or strong indirect sun to restore the deep purple pigment.
Leggy, sparse growth
Result of insufficient light. Pinch stem tips just above a leaf node to trigger bushier branching, and increase light.
Root rot / yellowing stems
Caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Let the top inch dry between waterings and use a pot with drainage holes.
Spider mites
Show as fine webbing and stippled leaves, especially in dry indoor air. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil and inspect regularly.
Aphids
Cluster on new growth and tender stems. Rinse off or treat with insecticidal soap; check undersides of leaves.
Brittle, snapping stems
Stems are succulent and break easily at the joints. Handle gently; broken pieces root readily as cuttings rather than going to waste.
