Tongue Fern problems — and how to fix them
Tongue Fern (Pyrrosia lingua) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Browning frond tips or edges
Caused by very dry air or hard water. Raise humidity modestly and use soft water if tips persistently brown.
Rhizome rot
From overwatering or a dense, soggy medium. Let the surface dry between waterings and grow in an airy, fast-draining mix.
Faded or scorched fronds
Harsh direct sun bleaches the felted surface. Move to bright indirect light or light shade.
Very slow spread
Normal for this species, but cold or compacted medium slows it further. Keep warm and use a loose, chunky substrate to encourage the rhizome.
