Tiger Fern problems — and how to fix them
Tiger Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata 'Tiger Fern') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Loss of variegation (reverting)
Fronds turn solid green in low light. Move to brighter indirect light and prune out any all-green fronds to encourage the variegated ones.
Brown, crispy tips
Low humidity or inconsistent watering. Raise humidity and keep the soil evenly moist; the lighter variegated tissue shows damage first.
Yellowing fronds
Overwatering, poor drainage or cold draughts. Check the pot drains freely, ease off water, and keep it away from vents and cold glass.
Spider mites and scale
Favoured by dry indoor air. Inspect frond undersides, rinse regularly, raise humidity, and use insecticidal soap for persistent infestations.
