Teysmann's Medinilla problems — and how to fix them
Teysmann's Medinilla (Medinilla teysmannii) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Failure to flower
Requires a cool, dry rest period of 6–8 weeks in autumn/winter (temperature around 15–17°C) to trigger bud set. Keeping plants too warm and wet year-round prevents blooming.
Root rot
Dense, moisture-retentive compost causes the epiphytic roots to suffocate and rot. Switch to a coarse bark-based orchid mix and allow the compost to partially dry between waterings.
Mealybugs
White, cottony clusters appear in leaf axils and on stems. Treat with a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol for small infestations, or apply a systemic insecticide for severe cases. Inspect regularly.
Prevent teysmann's medinilla problems before they start
Most teysmann's medinilla issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
