stromanthe (Stromanthe thalia) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Brown crispy leaf margins from low humidity
The single most common problem. Stromanthe thalia requires sustained humidity above 60%. A room humidifier is the most effective solution. Misting alone is insufficient. Avoid placing near heating vents or draughty windows that rapidly dry the air.
Spider mites and thrips in dry conditions
Low humidity and warm, still air attract spider mites and thrips. Check leaf undersides regularly. At first sign of infestation, raise humidity, shower the plant to dislodge pests, and treat with diluted neem oil or insecticidal soap every 7–10 days until clear.
Variegation reverting to green
In insufficient light, the striking pink and cream variegation fades and leaves emerge predominantly green. Increase light levels by moving closer to a bright window with indirect light exposure to restore full colour expression.
