Troubleshooting
Strawflower problems — and how to fix them
Strawflower (Helichrysum bracteatum) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Botrytis (grey mould) on bracts
Papery bracts trap moisture and are prone to botrytis in wet or humid conditions. Pick blooms for drying before they are fully open; improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering.
Legginess and stem collapse
Tall plants in exposed sites may topple. Support with twiggy sticks or grow through short pea netting; pinching young plants at 15 cm encourages a bushier, more self-supporting habit.
Aphids on shoot tips
Aphids cluster on tender new growth, especially in spring. Remove by hand or with a jet of water; apply insecticidal soap if infestations are heavy. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides that harm beneficial insects.
Prevent strawflower problems before they start
Most strawflower issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
