Fireblight (Erwinia amylovora)
As a rosaceous tree, Stern's medlar is susceptible to fireblight in warm, moist spring conditions. Prune out blighted shoots well below the visible infection margin; sterilise tools between cuts with 70% alcohol or bleach solution.
Root rot in wet soils
Poor drainage leads to root rot and rapid decline. Ensure excellent drainage, especially on clay soils; plant on raised beds or mounded soil if necessary. No serious insect pests have been reported in cultivation.
