Starfruit problems — and how to fix them
Starfruit (Averrhoa carambola) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Fruit cracking and drop
Irregular watering, especially drought followed by heavy rain or irrigation, splits ripening fruit and triggers drop; keep soil moisture even.
Iron and zinc chlorosis
On alkaline or sandy soils new leaves yellow between green veins; correct with chelated micronutrients and acidifying mulch.
Fruit flies
Carambola is a fruit-fly host; ripening fruit can be infested, so bag fruit, harvest promptly and use traps and sanitation.
Cold sensitivity
Temperatures near or below freezing damage leaves, fruit and young branches; protect or shelter plants when cold threatens.
Prevent starfruit problems before they start
Most starfruit issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
