Star Magnolia problems — and how to fix them
Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Frosted flowers
Early blooms are damaged by late frosts, turning brown and mushy. Plant in a sheltered spot away from frost pockets and early-morning sun to protect opening flowers.
Chlorosis on chalk
Yellowing leaves on shallow alkaline soils signal lime-induced iron deficiency. Improve with leaf-mould mulch and sequestered iron, or grow in a large container of ericaceous compost.
Root disturbance dieback
Fleshy roots are easily injured by digging or transplanting, causing stress and dieback. Avoid cultivating around the base and minimise root disturbance.
Coral spot / dieback
Pinkish pustules on dead twigs from a fungus that enters stressed or pruned wood. Prune only in midsummer when needed, make clean cuts, and remove affected stems.
