Spider Milkweed problems — and how to fix them

Spider Milkweed (Asclepias asperula) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Root rot in clay or wet soils

The most common cause of plant loss in cultivation. The deep taproot is highly susceptible to rot in poorly drained or overwatered soils. There is no recovery once severe rot sets in. Prevention through site selection and minimal watering is essential.

Bright yellow-orange oleander aphids colonise stem tips. Treat with targeted insecticidal soap or a strong water jet; avoid systemic insecticides to protect Monarch caterpillars which feed on this species.
