Smooth Beardtongue problems — and how to fix them
Smooth Beardtongue (Penstemon laevigatus) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Stem and root rot
Despite tolerating moisture better than other penstemons, prolonged waterlogging still causes rot. Ensure the planting site does not flood for extended periods.
Flopping stems
In fertile soils or partial shade, stems can become tall and floppy. Cut back by one-third after the first flush of bloom or grow in full sun with lean soil to maintain compact habit.
