Skinner's Zamia problems — and how to fix them
Skinner's Zamia (Zamia skinneri) is generally low-drama, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Leaflet tip burn from low humidity
Brown, dry tips spreading inward along the leaflets are the hallmark of insufficient atmospheric humidity. Increase humidity to above 60% consistently using a humidifier or pebble tray. Avoid positioning near heating vents or air-conditioning outlets.
Mealybugs in the crown and leaf axils
Mealybugs colonise where fronds meet the caudex and on new emerging fronds. They produce sticky honeydew that can lead to sooty mould. Dab colonies with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud and treat with insecticidal soap; repeat weekly until clear.
