Shiso problems — and how to fix them
Shiso (Perilla frutescens var. crispa) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Premature flowering/bolting
As days shorten in late summer the plant bolts to flower and leaf quality declines. Pinch out flower spikes regularly to prolong leaf harvest and prevent excessive self-seeding.
Aggressive self-seeding
Allowed to flower, shiso scatters seed prolifically and can become weedy. Deadhead flower spikes before seed sets if you want to control spread.
Wilting from underwatering
