Shahtoot Mulberry problems — and how to fix them
Shahtoot Mulberry (Morus macroura) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Cold damage in temperate climates
Morus macroura is less cold-hardy than M. alba or M. nigra and young shoots can be damaged by late frosts. Protect with horticultural fleece during cold snaps, and in USDA zones 7–8 grow against a warm wall. In the UK, grow in a pot that can be moved under glass in winter.
Poor fruiting in cool summers
In cooler temperate climates, insufficient summer heat leads to poor fruit set and under-ripe, flavourless fruit. Maximise heat by siting against a south-facing wall, use black-plastic mulch to warm the root zone, and remove excess shoot growth to concentrate energy on fruit.
Fruit drop before full ripeness
The long fruits can drop before fully ripe if subjected to water stress or strong winds. Maintain consistent irrigation during fruit swell and provide wind shelter. Harvest as soon as fruits colour fully — they do not store well and must be used within 24–48 hours of picking.
Prevent shahtoot mulberry problems before they start
Most shahtoot mulberry issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
