Senita Cactus problems — and how to fix them
Senita Cactus (Lophocereus schottii) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Root rot
Overwatering or poorly draining soil causes the base to soften and collapse. This is the primary cause of death in cultivation. Ensure soil dries thoroughly between waterings and that containers have unrestricted drainage holes.
Scale insects
Brown or gray waxy discs adhering to the rib edges are scale insects. Remove physically with a stiff brush or cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol, then follow up with neem oil spray. Inspect monthly during the growing season.
Mealybugs
White cottony wax deposits at areoles or the stem base indicate mealybugs. Treat with 70% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab or a systemic insecticide. Severe infestations may require repeated treatment over several weeks.
