Rooting Begonia problems — and how to fix them
Rooting Begonia (Begonia radicans) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Failure to flower
The most common issue is insufficient light — plants kept more than 1.5 m from a bright window rarely produce the characteristic coral-red flower clusters. Move to a brighter position or supplement with a grow light from autumn to encourage flowering in late winter and spring.
Stem rot at the base
Reddish stems blacken and collapse at the growing medium surface when compost stays waterlogged. Ensure the pot or hanging basket drains freely after every watering and that the mix is not compacted or dense.
Spider mites
Fine webbing and pale stippling on leaf undersides indicate red spider mite, which thrives in hot, dry conditions. Raise humidity, rinse leaves with lukewarm water, and apply an insecticidal soap or neem-oil solution; repeat every 5-7 days for at least three applications.
Prevent rooting begonia problems before they start
Most rooting begonia issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
