Ribbon Grass problems — and how to fix them
Ribbon Grass (Phalaris arundinacea 'Picta') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Invasive spreading
Runs rampantly by rhizomes and is invasive in many areas, escaping into wetlands; plant only in containers or with strong root barriers.
Summer browning
Foliage often browns and looks ragged in midsummer heat; shear the whole plant back hard to force fresh, clean variegated regrowth.
Reversion to green
Plain green shoots can appear among the variegated blades; pull these out promptly so the vigorous green form does not take over.
