Troubleshooting
Shingle Plant problems — and how to fix them
Shingle Plant (Rhaphidophora hayi) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Leaves not shingling / gaps between leaves
Too little light or no climbing support. Give brighter indirect light and a flat moss pole or board for leaves to press against and overlap.
Yellowing leaves
Usually overwatering or soggy, poorly draining mix. Let the top inch dry out, check for root rot, and use a chunky aroid mix in a pot with drainage holes.
Crispy brown leaf edges or tips
Low humidity or underwatering. Raise humidity toward 60%+ with a humidifier or grouping, keep the mix evenly moist, and avoid hot dry drafts.
Stalled or stunted growth
Often humidity dropping well below 50-60%, or cold temperatures below about 15C (60F). Warm it up, raise humidity, and feed during the growing season.
Scorched, bleached patches on leaves
Too much direct sun on the thin leaves. Move out of harsh midday sun to bright indirect light.
Pests (spider mites, mealybugs, scale)
Dry air invites spider mites. Inspect leaf undersides regularly, wipe foliage, raise humidity, and treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil as needed.
Prevent shingle plant problems before they start
Most shingle plant issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
