Purple Milkweed problems — and how to fix them
Purple Milkweed (Asclepias purpurascens) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Slow to establish
Purple milkweed can be slow and finicky to settle in and may take a couple of seasons to bloom well. Be patient and avoid disturbing the roots once sited.
Aphids (oleander aphids)
Orange-yellow aphids cluster on buds and stems. Dislodge them with water and avoid broad insecticides that harm monarch larvae.
Poor flowering in deep shade
Although shade-tolerant, too little sun reduces bloom. Give it at least part sun for the best flower display.
Drought stress
Unlike drought-loving butterfly weed, it wilts and declines in very dry soil. Mulch and water during prolonged dry spells.
