Purple Basil problems — and how to fix them
Purple Basil (Ocimum basilicum 'Purpurascens') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Bolting (early flowering)
Heat stress, drought, or simply maturity triggers flower spikes that turn leaves bitter. Pinch out flower buds promptly and harvest the top regularly to delay it.
Leaves greening, not staying purple
Insufficient light fades the purple pigment. Move to the sunniest spot available; some reversion to green leaves is also natural in this seed-grown selection.
Downy mildew
Yellowing leaves with grey-purple fuzz underneath, worse in humid, crowded conditions. Improve airflow, water at the base, and remove affected leaves quickly.
Sudden collapse in cold
Basil is frost-tender and chills below about 10°C, blackening and rotting. Keep it warm and bring container plants indoors before nights turn cold.
