Poke Milkweed problems — and how to fix them
Poke Milkweed (Asclepias exaltata) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Poor flowering in full sun and dry soil
As a woodland-edge species it suffers in hot, dry, fully exposed sites. Give it part shade or moist soil to perform well.
Aphids (oleander aphids)
Bright aphids gather on buds and stems. Wash them off with water rather than spraying broad insecticides that harm monarch caterpillars.
Floppy tall stems
The tall, slender stems can lean, especially in shade or wind. Site among other plants for support, or in a sheltered woodland-edge position.
Sparse availability
Less commonly cultivated, so plants and seed can be hard to source. Seek native-plant nurseries and cold-stratify seed for best results.
