Pitcher Sage problems — and how to fix them
Pitcher Sage (Salvia spathacea) is generally low-drama, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Powdery mildew
A common problem in late summer, particularly in humid climates or where air circulation is poor; presents as a white powdery coating on the large leaves. Improve spacing, avoid overhead watering, and treat with a diluted milk spray or copper-based fungicide.
Aggressive rhizome spread
In favourable conditions the plant can spread widely by underground rhizomes, potentially crowding out neighbouring plants. Install root barriers around small beds or plant in larger naturalistic spaces where spreading is an asset.
