Philodendron Xanadu problems — and how to fix them
Philodendron Xanadu (Thaumatophyllum xanadu (syn. Philodendron xanadu)) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Yellowing leaves
Usually a sign of overwatering or poor drainage; let the top of the compost dry out, check the roots are firm and white, and ease back on watering.
Brown, crispy leaf tips
Caused by low humidity, dry heated air or fertiliser salt build-up. Raise humidity, keep it away from radiators and flush the compost occasionally with plain water.
Leggy, sparse growth
Indicates too little light. Move it to a brighter spot with bright indirect light, but avoid harsh direct sun that scorches the foliage.
Sap-sucking pests
Aphids, mealybugs, scale, thrips and spider mites can all appear. Inspect leaf undersides regularly and treat early by wiping with diluted insecticidal soap or neem.
