Pflanz's Chin Cactus problems — and how to fix them
Pflanz's Chin Cactus (Gymnocalycium pflanzii) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Root rot from overwatering
The most common problem. The base of the stem turns soft and discolored. Always allow the soil to dry completely before watering and ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Mealybugs
White cottony clusters appear at spine bases or at soil level. Treat with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab or apply a diluted neem oil drench. Repeat after 10–14 days.
Failure to flower
Insufficient light or the absence of a cool, dry winter rest period prevents bud formation. Give the plant 8–10 weeks at 5–10°C (41–50°F) with very little water to stimulate spring flowering.
