Perplexing Rebutia problems — and how to fix them

Root and stem rot
Excess moisture during the cool winter rest period is the primary cause. Keep the mix nearly dry from October to February and ensure the pot drains freely. At the first sign of softening at the base, unpot, remove rotten tissue, and repot in dry gritty mix.
Mealybugs
White cottony masses hide between densely clustered stems and at the soil surface. Inspect regularly; treat with rubbing alcohol or neem oil spray and repeat after 10 days.
Poor flowering
Insufficient winter dormancy (temperatures above 10–12°C with regular watering) suppresses bud formation. Move to an unheated but frost-free space in autumn and keep dry to trigger the spring flush of blooms.
