Peony problems — and how to fix them
Peony (Paeonia) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
No flowers after planting
Planted too deep — buds should be no more than 2-3 cm below the soil surface in cold climates.
Botrytis (peony blight)
Black-streaked stems in wet weather; cut back affected growth and dispose.
Flopping stems
Heavy double flowers; stake with peony rings in spring.
Ants on buds
Harmless — ants feed on nectar and do not damage the buds.
Prevent peony problems before they start
Most peony issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
