Troubleshooting
Patriot Blueberry problems — and how to fix them
Patriot Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum 'Patriot') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Iron-deficiency chlorosis
Pale leaves with green veins indicate pH drift upward. Re-acidify with ericaceous feed and rainwater; apply chelated iron if severe.
Mummy berry
A fungal disease causing shrivelled grey fruit and shoot wilt in wet springs. Clear fallen mummified berries and mulch to bury overwintering spores.
Bird damage
Ripening berries are quickly taken by birds. Drape netting over the bush as fruit begins to turn blue.
Overly heavy crop on young bush
Young plants exhaust themselves if allowed to over-fruit. Remove flowers in the first year or two to build a strong framework.
