Troubleshooting
Painted Brake Fern problems — and how to fix them
Painted Brake Fern (Pteris tricolor) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Loss of variegation
Insufficient light is the main cause. Move to a brighter position with more indirect light to intensify the tricolour patterning.
Brown frond tips
Caused by low humidity or fluoride in tap water. Raise ambient humidity and use rainwater.
Root rot
Results from overwatering or poor drainage. Allow the top layer to dry before rewatering and ensure the pot drains freely.
Scale insects
Check frond undersides and stems. Remove manually with isopropyl alcohol and treat with neem oil.
Spider mites
Fine webbing and stippled fronds in dry, hot conditions. Increase humidity and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Prevent painted brake fern problems before they start
Most painted brake fern issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
