Ospina's Vriesea problems — and how to fix them
Ospina's Vriesea (Vriesea ospinae) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Crown rot
High moisture in the medium combined with cool temperatures or poor drainage causes rapid crown rot. Use a very coarse epiphytic mix, ensure temperatures remain above 16°C, and never let the medium become waterlogged.
Humidity stress
Below 55% humidity, leaf tips brown and growth slows noticeably. This cloud-forest species is less forgiving of low humidity than more common bromeliads; a humidifier is strongly recommended.
Delayed or absent flowering
Mature specimens that have not flowered after several years can be encouraged with an ethylene treatment: enclose loosely in a clear plastic bag with a ripe apple for 7–10 days in a warm spot.
