Fleshy Orbea problems — and how to fix them
Fleshy Orbea (Orbea carnosa) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Stem rot
The most common problem, caused by overwatering. Ensure soil dries completely between waterings and reduce irrigation in winter.
Mealybugs
Hide in the stem grooves; treat with rubbing alcohol or a systemic insecticide at the first sign of white cottony deposits.
Spider mites
Fine webbing between stems indicates an infestation; increase humidity slightly and treat with a miticide or neem oil.
Failure to flower
Usually caused by insufficient light or too much nitrogen fertiliser. Provide brighter conditions and use a low-nitrogen feed.
Unpleasant odour
The flowers naturally emit a fetid carrion scent to attract pollinators; this is normal and not a sign of disease. Remove spent blooms promptly if the smell is unwelcome.
Prevent fleshy orbea problems before they start
Most fleshy orbea issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
