Nodding Enkianthus problems — and how to fix them
Nodding Enkianthus (Enkianthus cernuus) is generally low-drama, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Root disturbance and transplant failure
Enkianthus cernuus dislikes root disturbance; mature plants suffer transplant shock severely. Site carefully at the outset and avoid hoeing or digging near the root zone. Weed with hand pulling only, or apply a thick mulch to suppress weeds.
Lacebug and scale insects
Lacebugs (Stephanitis spp.) and occasional scale infestations cause stippled, pale foliage and sooty mould. Inspect the undersides of leaves in summer; treat lacebugs with a pyrethrum or neem-based spray and scale with horticultural oil applied in late spring.
Prevent nodding enkianthus problems before they start
Most nodding enkianthus issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
