Noble Carrion Flower problems — and how to fix them
Noble Carrion Flower (Stapelia nobilis) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Stem rot from overwatering
Basal stem rot is the leading cause of plant loss, especially in cool, wet winter conditions. Remove rotted stems immediately, dust with fungicide or sulphur, and allow remaining healthy stems to dry before re-potting in fresh compost.
Pollinator flies indoors
Flowers emit a strong carrion smell that attracts blowflies which lay eggs in the blooms. Move the plant outside when flower buds are visible, or promptly remove flowers indoors to avoid an infestation.
Failure to flower
Inadequate light is the primary reason. Outdoors placement in a bright, warm spot during summer significantly increases flower production. Plants kept in low indoor light all year rarely bloom.
Prevent noble carrion flower problems before they start
Most noble carrion flower issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
