Mystery Gardenia problems — and how to fix them
Mystery Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides 'Mystery') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Bud drop
Buds turn brown and fall before opening due to inconsistent watering, low humidity, nighttime temperatures above 18 °C (64 °F), or moving the plant while in bud. Cool nights of 13–16 °C (55–60 °F) are essential for bud initiation and retention.
Leaf yellowing (chlorosis)
Interveinal yellowing on new growth indicates iron deficiency from alkaline soil or water. Use rainwater or filtered water, acidify potting mix with sulphur, and apply chelated iron foliar spray.
Mealybugs
White waxy clusters in leaf axils and stem joints. Dab with 70% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, then apply insecticidal soap or neem oil spray every 7 days until eradicated.
