Mombasa Cycad problems — and how to fix them
Mombasa Cycad (Encephalartos hildebrandtii) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Asian cycad scale
Aulacaspis yasumatsui is a major threat, forming dense white colonies on fronds and trunk. Treat with horticultural oil sprays, systemic insecticides, or biological controls (the ladybird Rhyzobius lophanthae). Early intervention is critical.
Manganese deficiency
Manifests as yellowing and necrosis of new fronds ('frizzle top') in alkaline soils or after heavy rainfall leaches nutrients. Apply manganese sulfate foliar spray or incorporate into a palm micronutrient supplement.
Sunburn on relocation
Moving a plant that has been in lower light directly to intense sun causes bleached, brown-tipped fronds. Acclimatize over 2–3 weeks by gradually increasing sun exposure.
Prevent mombasa cycad problems before they start
